Our school is the first to use the hikari method in the USA, so it is understandable that there are a lot of questions from parents. We receive inquiries about pre-screening and the length of the course, so we further elaborate on these topics.
Pre-screening: Understanding the use of abacus
In order to be a pupil at our school, kids must participate in pre-screening. No need to be frightened, the process takes only a few minutes. We test 4-6-year-olds until number 5 and 7-12-years-olds until number 9. This does not mean that children need to know and be able to write down numbers. They just have to learn the basics of using the abacus. If the teacher shows the number of the bullet on the abacus, the child must understand it. For example, if the value of a ball above the line is 5, the child cannot say 1 instead of 5. Of course it’s okay if they make a mistake once or twice, but if it’s more than 3, they won’t be able to go to school in that year. There is no reason to worry if someone fails the test, it does not mean that the child has any problems. Simply, in the given year, they are not ready for our program, but they can try again next year. Pre-screening is free, you do not have to bring any equipment and do not have any obligations. Participation does not mean you have to sign up.
A longer process, but a lasting result
In addition to pre-screening, we get a number of questions about why the program is so long, and why the child should attend our school for 5 × 5 months?
Of course, it is not obligatory, you can stop the program at any time, but you can’t expect effective and lasting results in this case. It’s like sports, diet or language learning. If we leave it, we can’t expect the promised results, so if we’ve started, it is worth doing it all along. After a while, we not only have a striking, but a long-lasting effect, too.
The first two semesters of our course are considered the beginner level, during which with the help of abacus we teach students to sum and subtract. The last three semesters are considered to be the advanced level where students can learn multiplication and division. This is a total of 25 months, the exact time a mental arithmetic teaching needs to have an effect. From the brain that has not been trained for years at this level, one cannot expect to work from one moment to the next. In order for the result to be long lasting, there is a lot of exercise and brain training, since balancing the right and left hemispheres takes time and attention. If the child stops the course sooner, our school cannot guarantee that the knowledge will be maintained.
The tasks of the parents
Practice is extremely important for the maximum effect, and parents are also an important part of this. It is not enough to bring the kids to us, it is important to motivate or to pay attention to the child’s homework and to practice at least 20 minutes a day at home. Learning is fun, but daily repetition is essential.
